PLANET is an acronym for: Protected Learning and New Educational Training.
Weston PLANET is a unique educational charity run by some of our General Practitioners (GPs) for all primary care clinicians in Weston-super-Mare, Worle and Surrounding Villages.
PLANET meetings are on the third Thursday of every month, except August and December. Lunch is always provided, followed by teaching sessions. Our member practices take turn to host locum cover for the afternoon so that all our members can attend. Thus we provide thirty hours per year of protected teaching for GP Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This arrangement is highly unusual and a great benefit to our GPs in the Locality.
The PLANET programs include annual hands-on Basic Life Support training and regular training in adult and child safeguarding. The rest of the program is guided by annual ballot from PLANET members. Over the years this has resulted in a vast range of interesting talks from “Interpreting the Full Blood Count” to “Paediatric Gait Disorders” to “The Health Impact of Air Pollution”.
PLANET speakers are invited to give a primary care perspective on their field of expertise, and the sessions tend to be interactive with plenty of opportunities for questions. We love to invite speakers from our local Weston Hospitals and other local providers so that we can get to know our secondary care colleagues (and put faces to the names on the clinical letters our GPs receive each day).
Meeting up with colleagues from other practices every month really enhances the feeling of being part of a wider primary care team, and greatly adds to our resilience and wellbeing as well as our inclusion ethos.
